Minecraft boots up just fine but then after the log in my screen goes black and I crash.
I'm just starting to use linux and am a total noob.
What ubuntu version?
Try starting it from console so you can get an error msg. Post said error msg.

Version is 11.10
Well MC works just fine on my Mint Linux 12 - (Ubuntu varient)
You do need to get the linux natives files though (google Linux Minecraft Button Stick) and that might help you.
Otherwise, an error code would be nice!

Don't use Ubuntu if you're using it as a Desktop.
EDIT: By 'Desktop', I mean as your main OS, or your main go-to computer.
