RE: Water
I thought if you broke ice in the nether water happened. You just need to find someone who still has some ice. This is fixed in 1.3 though so you can't wait for silk touch to work again.

*edit
It says on the wiki that the ice has to be allowed to melt to produce a water source block, however I'm pretty sure I saw Etho break an ice block to make a water source. It's up to you whether to risk it or not.

RE: Water
Just looked that up, it does work. And as for needing ice I have plenty, you dont even need a silk pick to get it if your really that desperate.

Breaking or melting ice in the nether causes a water source to be made, but it's stationary (only for servers)

Breaking ice in single player just makes the water go away.

If it melts in single player, it'll cause a flowing water source (last time I tried this was in Beta 1.4)

[+][+][+][+][+][+][+][+][+]

What was the start of all this?
When did the cogs of fate begin to turn?
Perhaps it is impossible to grasp that answer now,
From deep within the flow of time...
But, for a certainty, back then,
We loved so many, yet hated so much,
We hurt others and were hurt ourselves...
Yet even then we ran like the wind, Whilst our laughter echoed,
Under cerulean skies...

To make it flow in multiplayer just place a block next to it, it causes it to update and flow.
